My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Wednesday, September 22, 2010 | 5 photos

With the perfect surf, authentic tacos and fresh ocean air, a visit to Rosarito, Mexico can make anyone contentedly blissful. After the very unexpected death of 21-year-old Trevor Correia in May of 2010, however, it became a haven of healing and support for his traumatized friends. Using Rosarito as an escape from reality, the San Diego companions were able to find joy in their memories of Mexico with Correia and find comfort in each other more than ever.
To me, a place does not become a place until people give meaning to it. The photos of Rosarito represent the power and effect that this place had on those who are suffering.
I may not have the best camera equipment, but I do have an intense passion for capturing the special moments in life - the moments that would be lost without the power of a camera. I believe that every thing, whether living or static, has a unique personality. My mission is to capture that in the most interesting way possible. I am eager to learn the skills that will improve my ability to document these special moments and I eat up any opportunity to receive guidance.
If I were chosen for this scholarship I would approach it with honor. I would use what I know to photograph with integrity and passion, capturing the “personalities” of all things in Bhutan. I would look forward to learning skills to improve my photography and bring issues to the public eye that are often overlooked and that I am compassionate about, specifically children and adults with special needs in both the U.S. and elsewhere. I have a 20-year-old brother with Autism and along with winning this scholarship; it is my goal to use my skills to improve the lives of those affected by the handicap.
