My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

USA | Thursday, October 14, 2010 | 3 photos

All I can think about is, I want to go to Bhutan. I want to be part of this exciting adventure. I've thought about it for months, reading anything I can get my hands on about this far away kingdom that is so secluded from everyday life.
There's a quote by Dorothea Lange that sits on my desktop "One should really use the camera as though tomorrow you'd be stricken blind." Since I can remember I've always had a camera in hand. Recording family life or wandering off to explore, came naturally to me. As I got older, I was told being an artist wasn't enough, I had to find a career where I could support myself financially. Graphic Design was my choice of majors, but something was missing. Passion. A little over a year ago I was editing a photo of my niece, it was 3 am and everyone was sound asleep, yet I was more awake than ever. I sat back to stare at her porcelain skin, big blue eyes and tiny wisps of blonde hair, glowing in the sunlight streaming in from a window. I couldn't stop smiling it made me so happy. Then it hit me like a bolt of lightning, this is what I NEED to be doing! From that day forward I jumped into high gear. I've become a dedicated student of the craft. Not striving for a degree this time, instead searching for a way of life where I can combine my love of photography, people, and travel.

On a sunny afternoon in Ft.Lauderdale Florida, we decided to explore downtown. After a visit to the museum we drove to the top of the parking garage. There on the seventh floor was uncharted territory for my camera. I asked my husband and daughter to try some random poses as I played with capturing silhouettes. The sun had no mercy and my daughter quickly ran back to the air conditioned car. The captions tell a story about one man's stand against the decline of fatherhood in our generation.
