My Photo scholarship 2011 entry - Oklahoma - Native America

Hello, my name is Tera Bunney. I reside in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I discovered my passion for photography only a few short years ago. My mother was a photographer and I never understood the joy it brought her and other people till I purchased my first digital camera on Mother’s Day. My mother had passed 5 years earlier and she was on my mind. So, I decided to buy a camera in her memory, and it was the best thing that ever happened to me! When I get behind the lens, the whole world is more vibrant and interesting than ever, and I love to share that with everyone.
With that being said, I chose to share Oklahoma, Native America.
Oklahoma is rich in Native American history with over 39 different tribes currently located in our state. The Cherokee Indian Tribe suffered great losses during the passage known as the “Trail of Tears”. Over 4,000 of their 15,000 people perished during this journey. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 eventually brought the tribe to Oklahoma in 1838. I find it amazing that the tribes still practice the rituals of their forefathers after 173 years.
I thought long and hard about what to submit to this competition. I have studied and listened to every one of Jason’s videos. I am ready for this challenge and want to take it to the next level. I think we all have beautiful pictures. We all have talent. But I represent the American dream! I work a normal job, my kids are almost grown, I have no formal education, yet I am still a willing student ready to learn and embark on a new journey!
I appreciate your time and thank you!
