Fire and Tea
Short stories from around the world
About justinedejonge
“Australians do not go to ‘the seaside’ the way the English do.
We go to the beach with a mixture of gusto and apprehension, for our sea
is something to be reckoned with. We are reared on stories of shark
attacks, broken necks from dumpings in the surf, and the spectre of
melanoma. I suspect we go because of these warnings, at times, and not
simply despite them. The sea is one rare wild card left in the
homogenous suburban life. Deep down we still see ourselves as goers.” –
Tim Winton, Land’s Edge
Australians are raised with adventure pumping through their veins. We
grow up surrounded by water and desert; two very distinct and
mysterious opposites. We know that many worlds exist beyond our borders
and we understand the complexity of culture.
Like many Australians, my childhood was crammed with long-weekend
getaways, school holiday camping trips and rough journeys packed up in
the back of a four-wheeled drive. Yet, unlike many Australians, I spent
half of my life being pulled from one side of the country to the other.
I’ve lived in three major capital cities, two gold-mining towns and one
seaport. I guess you could say I was born to travel.
Fire and Tea is a collection of my travel stories. I will be
journalling my travels, both locally and abroad, to give you a glimpse
into my life as a born traveller. My adventures will stretch from as
close as the rainy streets of Melbourne’s CBD in Australia to the desert
heat of the Middle East. I hope you enjoy the ride.
