The Lake

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

China | Tuesday, October 25, 2011 | 5 photos

During my five years living in China I saw so many mind-blowing beautiful things and I loved to take photos of them, but it was not until I saw a photo of Lake Karakorum in West China that I decided I needed to get serious. I was determined to photograph this stunning isolated body of water surrounded by 7000m mountains, and its inhabitants.
I knew it would be hard to do this lake justice, and that I had to get a DSLR camera to make it work. I was obsessed with the blues of the lake and sky, the difficult light, the snow and the reflections on the water; I lived for the perfect cloud and the moment when the animals turned around to make the shot. This was my first real attempt at photography in September 2010; I have been snapping ever since. I still have so much to learn and I believe this scholarship would be the perfect environment to develop my skills.
I am passionate about travel as I worked for Intrepid travel for years in China; I am up for rough adventurous travel and willing to go all the way for the perfect shot. I particularly love nature and wildlife as you can see from the theme of my submission; and I also relish the chance to capture wild and isolated cultures. I love the idea of being on observer, and that is what has brought me to photography.
My friends tell me I have a great eye for composition and that I always capture the beauty in the moment. This lake has been my first real inspiration and I am determined now to make the most of this opportunity and find a new inspiration in the wilds of the African plains.
