My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I am a lone wolf by nature. This is what got me into photography in the first place. When things prove to be too much I take my camera and step out the door. It is my therapy. My way of getting out of my head and finding solace in other people.
I am drawn to documentary photography. Staying with a story and really getting to know your subject is not a luxury I am afforded as a producer of a weekly documentary show. It is in my photography projects that I get to explore these places deeply. I try to tell their stories honestly but with integrity.
I stay interested because I must keep learning. Each skill honed will keep the next moment from passing you by. I chase the footsteps of photographers I admire and at the same time struggle to find my own voice. There is only so much I can learn from reading- to be able to observe and consult with Jason Edwards would teach so much.
I was once asked why I do this even if it is impractical and uncertain. I have no definite answer, I just know that photography opens my eyes to a world much bigger than myself- something I feel I need to be a better person. I am hoping this scholarship will be another step closer to finding my answer.
