Cooking with Kangaroo

AUSTRALIA | Friday, 13 July 2007 | Views [2998] | Comments [5]

While doing research about where to go during our time in Australia, an Aussie friend told me I had to try kangaroo meat. Later on we met some Brisbaners in Vietnam, and when I mentioned we were looking forward to eating some 'roo they told us that it's just for tourists. Not exactly what we like to hear, but since we are tourists after all, we figured what the hell.

most tourists can't believe we eat the furry, friendly critters... but as you discovered, it tastes good. It's also very high in iron and very low in fat.
I spent my student days slow-cooking Kangaroo curries (it's quite cheap to buy some cuts). If you want to eat it like a steak, it's best cooked med-rare on a BBQ (of course!) as it can get a bit chewy when cooked for too long. Enjoy!

Yum, Kangaroo steaks/fillets are the way to go. Sear them nicely on the bbq, but don't overcook them (leave them pink in the middle). Melts in your mouth & tastes much better than beef! Happy Eating.

Well, I've just watched your movie without sound, and enjoyed it all. (just moved really rural NZ, on my weekly trip into town to look at email)! However, where are the flies? Are you really in a studio? Or did I just smell a lot?

Thanks for the kangaroo cooking tips. It was on the menu regularly during our Intrepid trip, but we've yet to have a steak. We'll have to rustle one up before we go!

Timo, cheers for using some of your valuable net time watching. There are a few flies buzzing around in there, but they weren't as bad as we were expecting. Must be a wintertime bonus....the near freezing temps at night would be the trade-off I guess.
