January - Kiruna Snow Festival, Sweden

SWEDEN | Wednesday, 17 December 2008 | Views [3877] | Comments [2]

Location: Kiruna, Sweden. The snow sculpture competition takes place near the town hall.

Dates: Late January (varies each year)

Level of Participation: 4 – take part in guided tours, ice skating, lectures and Northern Lights viewing

Europe’s largest snow festival takes place 140km above the Arctic Circle in the Lapland town of Kiruna. Running over six days, it’s held beneath the glittering Northern Lights and features a host of winter- and space-related (Kiruna is home to Europe’s only civil space station) activities, including dog sledding, snowmobiling and star gazing. The festival’s centrepiece is the snow sculpting competition in which artists compete for the title of Swedish Snow Sculpting Champion. In four days competitors must carve out a 3-sq-metre block of ice, producing results that are more artistic than replica – no large snow bunnies or Eiffel Towers here.

The Snow Festival was first held in 1986 to coincide with the launch of the Viking satellite, and has been held every year since.

Essentials: Expect temperatures of around -10˚C to -25˚C in Kiruna, so come well wrapped.

Local Attractions: Combine this most wintry of events with the most wintry stay imaginable – the famed Icehotel is in the village of Jukkasjärvi, less than 20km from Kiruna. See why Kiruna gets so hepped up about its space links with a guided visit to Esrange Space Center.
