Welcome to Agats. Pastor Jan Smith monument stands in the harbor Agats, the only gate to Agats City. Pastor Jan Smith was murdered in his efforts to spread education for Asmat children. Since the incident, the tidal floods often hit Agats. Then the authorities built this monument, to commemorate the services of the priest Jan Smith and as a symbol to deny reinforcements. Believe it or not, the local people say that it works.
