1001 on the 101

The bunkers have long been reclaimed by nature, but a graffiti artist reclaimed it with the work shown. I took this shot of myself to connect the attitude expressed by the work to a person. My long board fit perfectly in the composition and fit with the character of the attitude that I was trying to capture.

In the summer of 2014 I had the privileged living on the Oregon Coast. I did a lot of traveling along Highway 101, specifically 1001 miles (hence the 1001 on the 101). On my days off I sought adventure and photo opportunities.

Each of my photo entries centers around the common theme of the wilderness vs. civilization vs. the individual.

I had been told about these old abandoned bunkers on the coast of Oregon, and I decided to seek them out.

You can clearly see that the roof is missing and creates this effect of the bunker being integrated into nature rather than separated from it.

Walking to the bunkers I was overcome by the vastness of the coastal forest. I can only imagine the thoughts going through the heads of the first explorers to try and settle this land. They were probably filled with a mixture of awe and excitement.
