    The priceless reward of finally reaching the peak, after an exhausting five hour trek in the sun. This particular mountain is called Sassopiatto, which ironically translates to 'flat stone'. From the top on a clear day, you can see the surrounding Dolomite ranges and all the way out to the Austrian and Swiss alps too. Views[143] Even in the middle of summer, snow can be seen on certain parts of the mountains, still unmelted from last winter. Views[177] The guy who hosted me had an enormously friendly St Bernard dog named Anton. This breed is common in the region and are rumoured to be used in finding missing people post-avalanche. I learnt that Donkeys are highly territorial as I watched with dismay when one tried to trample poor Anton to death. Views[159] The valley sits amongst the Dolomites mountain range, a UNESCO world heritage site. The locals speak a mixture of Italian, German and a dialect called Ladin. Views[129] Val Gardena in South Tyrol is a ski village during winter season. I first discovered it on a ski trip with friends and decided to return to see its beauty in the summertime.
