My Scholarship entry - The Sulphur Miners Of Ijen Crater

I have always been fascinated by the concept of ‘reality’. Since I began travelling 18 months ago, I have realised that perceptions of reality can profoundly differ from one being to another. It is from this realisation that my understanding of photography has grown. Travel photography drives me to discover new places, from The Pantanal to Patagonia. Through trial and error I have taught myself valuable lessons about composition. While on the road I have also passed iphotocourse’s The Wonderful World of Photography with distinction. However, there is only so much I can learn from theory and self-analysis. I am sorely lacking hands-on guidance, an experienced professional who can critically analyse my entire creative process. The scholarship’s focus on technique is ideal for me to learn how to improve the overall quality of my images. It would also help to cement my photographic ‘voice’. I want to share my unique perception of reality with the world. I love the challenge of expressing my feelings about a scene while staying true to my subject. Expanding my audience’s notion of what constitutes reality in this world, through the power of the final image, is the ultimate thrill.
