    Staying in that place of memories was for Henrique as if he was going back in time. Simultaneously, he somehow got stricken by the passage of the years. He had colored his life with travels and adventures, though he had belonged to that place all along. Now he brought within him all the many different places. He wanted to stay, but most of all he was eager to find out what awaited him ahead. Views[235] Henrique’s little cousin and her brother, whom he had never seen, not even in pictures, were curious watchers during our stay. They progressively became less timid and got us mingled in their games. They had never left the “cerrado”, thus they wanted to know how we played in the place where we came from. Views[217] Lunch was being prepared when we arrived. We were greeted with open smiles and Henrique was asked if he still liked chicken with “corante”, a kind of paprika - he certainly did. The “corante”, which literally means coloring, gets its name from the intense coloring it gives to the food it garnishes. It was grown in the backyard. Views[184] Living away from his motherland for the past 5 years, Henrique told me that whenever he felt “saudade”, also described as a kind of nostalgia, he would cope by trying to evoke a familiar taste or smell. The most soothing was that of the strong spicy taste of every meal, cooked slowly in a wood-burning stove. Views[214] We had been travelling across Brazil for the past month, but for Henrique there was only a place we couldn’t miss: the land where his father had been born and raised. The same place where he had spent his youth. So we travelled away from the cities, into the countryside, the “cerrado”, crossing the BR 040. Views[193]
