My Scholarship entry - The Ocean - a place which connects us all

My tongue manoeuvres to replicate a foreign dialect, nostrils flaring to capture the scent as my brain scrambles to process every snippet of stimuli. I’ve always been an adventurer, comfortable with discomfort; whether it be hiking in the snow, sweltering in the jungle or exploring the Australian bush. My adventures captured as words in a tattered but well-loved exercise book, in photographs providing a portal back to the moment they were taken, by sweaty hands enveloped humid rainforest or by fingers stiffened in frigid air.
Photography is a language that transpires dialect, creed or race. The story of an individual, community or environment can be expressed in a single well executed frame. As a photographer I feel responsibility to communicate the story of the places I’ve been with authenticity and respect. It is my goal to develop the ability to capture the essence of the subject and tell their story in a way that evokes action from the viewer.
This scholarship would allow me the ability to learn the nuances of storytelling in this style, to grow as a photographer and build a solid foundation towards sharing my subject’s stories with the world.
