World Nomads Gives Back: The Footprints Story

WORLDWIDE | Monday, 22 September 2014 | Views [2609]

Like lots of travellers, the team at World Nomads believes that we’ve all got a responsibility to give back to the places in which we travel.

We sat down with World Nomads Footprints Co-Founder Christy McCarthy to talk about the history of the Footprints program, how it works, and the impact it has had on the world.

Where did the idea for Footprints come from?

The Southeast Asian tsunami in 2004 was the trigger for World Nomads to start thinking about how we wanted to give back - and that really was the catalyst. From that, Footprints as an idea was born.

Tell us how it works.

Footprints is all about leaving tiny positive footprints on the internet. And we do that by asking our travellers for a micro-donation when they buy their travel insurance. We bring all the micro-donations together, we collect them up and with that we are able to fund community development projects around the world.

What types of projects does Footprints fund?

We have funded lots of water and sanitation projects, education projects that empower teachers and providing material for students, agriculture projects that aid in food security and train farmers - we’ve even helped fund a goat bank!

What impact had Footprints made?

To date, we’ve raised more than $2 million dollars in total. That’s from nearly 900,000 individual donors. We’ve been able to put that to good use supporting about 110 different community development projects.

What are your hopes for the future of Footprints?

Footprints could be massive! I mean for starters we see such commitment from our travellers who buy travel insurance on Worldnomads.com. We know that they really care and hope that that continues on. If we think big there is no reason to think it couldn’t fund a billion dollars of great projects around the world.
