My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited
New Zealand | Thursday, July 4, 2013 | 5 photos
Pitt Island is the second largest island in the Chatham Archipelago. It is 7.7 square kilometres and is the first populated location on earth to observe the sunrise in each New Year. It was originally inhabited by the Moriori,
I discovered the island on a geological trip. I love the island because of the beauty of the place. I admire the strength of the people living there fighting the roaring 40’s. It is a place like no other on earth. When we arrived we were welcomed by the locals, a group of curious little blue penguins.
I guess like in Greenland, the community is very important and works together. You cannot forget anything at the supermarket or you have to wait for the next boat to arrive.
Why should I be chosen?
I started photography when my father gave me my first camera at 7. I like studying places and people. I love the wild environments where nature is so present. I visited Scandinavia and Iceland and now living in New Zealand gives me a chance to experience this on a day to day basis.
I usually travel on my own but for the trip to Pitt Island I wanted so badly to go that I went as the cook for a team of geologists. It was an incredible experience.
