A Nomads Year in Review - 2010

WORLDWIDE | Wednesday, 19 January 2011 | Views [2795]

Well it’s been an amazing year for WorldNomads.com and our travellers. On a sad note we’ve had major floods, earthquakes, landslides and all manner of challenges that have handled by our travellers and local communities. The spirit shown by communities to pull together and support each other and the efforts made by travellers to volunteer wherever possible never ceases to amaze and inspire us.

On a more positive note, we’ve shared in the amazing stories told by our World Nomads, watched in awe the videos produced by you on the road and done our very best to ensure that you’ve both travelled safely and got the most from your travel experiences.

We’ve greatly valued the feedback given to us throughout 2010 and it’s inspired us to not only improve our travel insurance product, but look to offer more opportunities to help you seek adventure, connect to a global network of travellers, share your tales and give back where you can, in other words be true World Nomads.

So without further group hugs, here’s a reflection on what was an amazing year.

Van-Tastic Adventures airs on Nat Geo Adventure

Last year, we sent 7 pairs of backpackers off to motor around Australia and take on heaps of adventure activities - all in our fully kitted-out campervan. Each team was armed with a video camera to document their entire experience and create short videos about their journeys.

Well…Nat Geo Adventure came knocking on our door and wanted to create a TV series from the footage. Can you guess what our answer was? On January 9th the first episode featuring Andrew & Willie’s Van-Tastic Adventure in the Northern Territory aired in Australia and New Zealand. They are now looking at the Queensland road trip for a second installment. Stay tuned!

Footprints Donations Reached  $1M!

Our online charity program, The Footprints Network, was founded to give a little back to the communities in which we travel. When you purchase a travel insurance policy with us, you can chose to make a small donation to the community development project of your choice.

All of those donations add up! The Footprints Network reached 1 million dollars in donations in late 2010. Thanks to the donations of 386,246 people, 61 projects were completed all over the world to reach this milestone!

Terrifying Travel Tales winner announced!

Ah, travel - the adventure, the stories, the unexpected twists. We asked our travel community to share those unexpected twists – their most terrifying travel tales, stories of triumph over tragedy - for a chance to embark on a new adventure.

From pesky parasites to motorbike mishaps, we heard it all. The community voted on the top entries and Caitie Goddard’s story The Buganda in Uganda Don’t Play won the title of the top Terrifying Travel Tale. And that news has got her dancing! Caitie is headed to Buenos Aires with GoLearnTo.com to learn Spanish and Argentinean tango.

Scholarships Travel from Antarctica to Amazon

Writing - This year kicked off as we sent travel writing scholarship winner, Amy Palfreyman on assignment to Tokyo, Japan under the mentorship of writer Simon Richmond. She embarked on a ‘Flavours of Tokyo’ tour and set out to research and update the Rough Guide to Japan. Amy has since landed herself a gig writing the Australia Guide for Rough Guides!

Photography - Next we ventured a bit further south, sending travel photography scholarship winner Anna Zhu to capture the extreme landscapes and fauna of Antarctica on film. Anna was mentored by Nat Geo photographer Jason Edwards during her thirteen day assignment. Check out her photos from the trip.

Documentary - We rounded out the world tour in scholarships with a travel documentary scholarship to the Amazon. Winner Mohamed Soliman travelled to Ecuador to gain insight into the lives of the indigenous Quechua community in the Amazonian jungle. Mohammed worked alongside documentary filmmaker Trent O’Donnell to explore the positive impact that sustainable tourism has had in the area.

Onwards and upwards in 2011...

So all in all it was an amazing year! It’s been our pleasure to serve our World Nomads and we look forward to working harder this year to make sure you get the most from your travels.

From all of us here at WorldNomads.com - Keep travelling safely in 2011!
