After splitting the palm leaf into two he demonstrate the weaving which is used as the roof for the houses in the background. The individual leaves stay in place by breaking the spine of the leaf. It’s a cost effective as is lasts for a number of years.

An excellent image which conveys one of the many uses of the common coconut.
