    King John's Castle Views[413] King John's Castle with the Shannon in the background Views[410] A tributary of the River Shannon, houses, hills. Views[524] This is King John's Castle on the banks of the Shannon, built between 1200-1220AD Views[423] Quiet sun-dappled street in Limerick. It's funny, Limerick has a bit of a reputation as being a pretty rough city, but I quite liked it. When I told some friends I'd been to Limerick they said things like
     
    This is a traditional Clochan which is what the first inhabitants lived in thousands of years ago. The doorway is only about 60cm high, it would ahve been a pretty miserable way to live in winter Views[625] The main beach and pier in the east of the island Views[407] Looking north from the south-eastern part of the island.     The cliffs on the wild western side of the island. The wind was so strong this day that it was a struggle to hold the camera still. Here's a fact for you Mum: a few tourists die on Ireland's west coast every year by being blown off cliffs in strong gusts of wind! Views[313] Some of the stone walls are over 4000 years old. Part of the reason they were built is to fence off land, part just to clear the land so it is free of stone. Most of the soil is made from seaweed amd composting over thousands of years Views[309] Another view, more stone Views[322] There is so much stone on the islands, it's used for pretty much everything Views[286] Looking up the hill, the B&B I was staying in is the middle of the 3 houses on the ridge at the top. The husband was born in a house 50m down the road, and everyone on the island speaks Irish as their first language Views[353]

It was only built in in the 1930's but the stained glass is pretty amazing Views[353] Traditional style houses on the island. The white one was the home of a famous writer, somebody Synge, who exiled himself on the island to write Views[368]

    My workplace, yay....I don't have many nice things to say so I won't say anything much at all Views[319] The coast at Salthill, about 3 km from Galway. That is one of the Aran Islands in the distance, and my work is just across the road from here Views[445] The River Corrib Views[264] The main street in Galway, which is like a long pedestrian mall. This is early in the morning so it's pretty quiet, normally it is full of people walking, sitting in alfresco cafes and bars, and buskers Views[594] Some weird sculpture in Eyre Square Views[682]
     
    Eyre Square, in the heart of Galway. My hostel is on the bottom right corner. This is a very quiet afternoon in Eyre Squre, sometimes you have a hard time finding a spare patch of grass Views[513] Barna Wood Views[684] Barna Wood, a beautiful little forest on the coast near Galway. As you walk through you almost expect to see little elves and fairies scurrying about Views[678] The River Corrib. As it flows through Galway there are a series of weirs that control the flow of water Views[300] The River Corrib, near where it flows into Galway Bay Views[319]
     
    Kylemore Abbey Views[341] Kylemore Abbey Views[296] A view of Kylemore Abbey, built in the 19th Century for a wealthy English business man who spent his honeymoon in Connemara and fell in love with the place. It took 12 years to build and he kept it asecret from his wife the whole time. Finally he unveiled his surprise and the family moved in, but 2 months later the wife died of a mysterious illness. A few weeks after that, both his daughters were killed in a freak horse riding accident. So he sold it to the nuns and went back to England a broken man, thinking the place was cursed. It is now an ultra-exclusive boarding school Views[399] Connemara National Park Views[359] Coming through Connemara National Park, between Westport and Galway. It's absolutely stunning Views[279]
