My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

China | Friday, July 5, 2013 | 5 photos

My two passions in life have always been art and travel. I have enjoyed art ever since I bought my first coloring book in preschool. After I got over the whole “staying inside the lines” concept, art became an outlet for my pent-up creativity. I struggled in high school with relating the material I learned in the classroom to the outside world. My math tutor told me to turn my algebra equations into art so I would better remember them. It helped a little but I still could not sit for hours, memorizing facts and dates for history, and trying to make sense of chemistry. I wanted to get out of the classroom and into the world. I finally got the opportunity to do that when I went on a summer exchange to Argentina. I learned more about history, geography, economics, and Spanish in those two months abroad than in my two years high school. What excites me most about photography is that it combines my two passions into one. My first priority when traveling is to learn about life from the people I meet. Through this experience, I hope to learn how to better capture a place in the most ascetically pleasing way possible. I have much to learn and hope you will consider me for this scholarship.
