This photo really encompasses the daily life of China. With the ever present bike in the foreground and a small convenience stall operating from a window in a building in the background. These small stalls, while common enough, are starting to face to competition from big Western brand names such as Walmart and 7-Eleven.

One of the most remarkable things I had the pleasure of observing while I was in China was the sense of community, especially in the older generations. I took this photo of a woman just finishing an exercise dance routine with the women in the background. It was a rather cold and windy day, yet with that look of contentment on her face she could have been someplace much warmer. It is a growing fear in China, much like in many other parts of the world, that as a result of technological progress, these communal ties will not be passed on to the next generation.

I was lucky enough to be visiting a friend in Hong Kong during the annual Dragon Boat festival. During this festival cities China wide host Dragon Boat races. Teams range from professionals to high school students and it is a exciting demonstration of community and Chinese culture. Even in the somewhat removed and modern administrative region Hong Kong, the tradition is still kept alive.
