My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Israel | Friday, July 5, 2013 | 4 photos

As I sit and wonder how to impress the reader of my entry with all the qualifications I have and great things I have accomplished, I can’t help but think of the many experiences I’ve had, people I met, and sights I saw while traveling the Middle East. The truth is I’m hooked, I knew the minute I left my small town on the south shore of Long Island. I got off that plane and there it was, Jerusalem, Israel.

Myself being not particularly religious, I felt the freedom to investigate every aspect of the Israeli culture, without bias. The major monotheistic religions: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, all present in this land rich with the histories of many diverse peoples.

So here I am; my name is Kristen Vetter and I fell in love with the Middle East. Last year, while studying for my BFA at the Maryland institute College of art, I lived in Jerusalem for 6 months and was able to travel all over the "Holy Land” including Egypt and Jordan. There is so much beauty in the different cultures of the world and it’s my experiences in the Middle East that have driven my desire to document human interactions in their respective environments.
