The A Bomb dome, the most recognisable Hiroshima landmark, preserved as a memorial to those that lost their lives as a result of the nuclear bomb. Public opinion was divided on whether the building should have been demolished along with the rest of the city or preserved as a reminder of the devastation. Ultimately the decision was taken to preserve the skeletal remains and build the Peace Park around it.
