My Scholarship entry - The Phool Mandi

What a life-changing opportunity! I would feel immensely privileged to be given the chance to shadow James and his team in the lush remoteness of the Amazon. Such adventures!
I am Kate. I work in education development. The job is a happy combination of travel and meaningful work. It is also the life of a nomad - moving every few years to set up new homes, new friendships, and new connections. A large part of my interpretation and engagement with the places I find myself, is through photography. It takes me outside, forces me to interact, allows me to stop and observe - essentially it gives purpose.
Photography can be seen as highly technical and mechanical - it is this which makes it an interesting bridge between so many forms of art and communication. However, I find in it another sense - some combination of unconscious thought and feeling, channelled through the camera.
If I were to be awarded this scholarship, I would hope most for inspiration and new direction. I'd like to learn different skills and approaches from James. I would like to explore if I have the skill to make photography my profession; to use it to communicate stories, document issues, and inspire others.
