The memory of place

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

The memory of a place haunts us long after we've left. Raised Catholic in South Africa my parents did allot of charity work, which would often raise questions for me as a child. Some questions were about needless suffering in the world, others were more about instances of hypocrisy I encountered within the Church. These injustices were, unsatisfactorily, justified through a mix mash of Catholic ideology and the African parables my maid would tell me as bed time stories. Now living in New Zealand I undertook a photography project to capture my memories of South Africa at that time in my life. I wanted to track these memories as ongoing influences in my life rather than moments I had lost to the past.

To me Africa will always be home. My dad is a vet and I have an undying passion for animals they mirror all our best attributes probably more than they mirror our faults. Recently I have graduated from a Fine Art degree majoring in large format photography and am now on placement at an advertising firm. But my true passion is and always will be photography. My dream would be to travel and photograph for National Geographic.
