My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Nepal | Friday, July 5, 2013 | 6 photos

I obtained an MRes in Visual Anthropology at Goldsmiths College and I am trying to pursue a career of photographer. I am an alpinist and good skier, I am used to travel in difficult conditions and I am in good physical shape. Photography plays a great part in my job (free lance journalist/ researcher) and I acquired my skills and knowledge by practice and experience. I think is now the right time for me to have a proper mentor in order to upgrade my level from amateur to pro photographer. I am sure this opportunity could refine and develop my technique and my capacities. In my pictures of nepal I portray the condition of the women in Achham and Dailekh districts; where the social and religious power, expressed and exerted by hinduism, still compels women to the practice of Chaupadi. A form of seclusion during the period of menstruation. Women must spend their "impure" period in a Chaughar which can vary from dedicated and separated room in brahmin's house to the pigpen in the case untouchables. Maoists are active in eradicating such a practice ritual through education, in schools and healthposts; but quite ironically the resistance comes from old traditional women.
