My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Peru | Friday, July 5, 2013 | flickr photos

My love of photography began in high school when I would sit by a pond for hours waiting to get the perfect picture of a dragonfly or tromping through the woods near my home looking for a deserted house to document. While reading geography books I would dream of traveling around the world for free with just a backpack and my camera. In 2011, I traveled to Peru and visited a home for abandoned boys and discovered my passion to be a voice for the overlooked and misunderstood. I began to understand and respect photography’s power to produce intimacy and convey emotion. This potential drives me to learn more and shoot better every time I raise my camera. Yet I have only scratched the surface, which makes the opportunity to be mentored by Jason something I can’t afford to pass up. As a college student I tire of reading books, writing papers and hearing the amazing experiences of others. I wonder, “Will I EVER get the chance to do what I REALLY love?” In a time when photography and journalism are more competitive and rapidly changing this experience is invaluable for refining my amateur skills to professional standards and gaining knowledge and experience of a real field assignment.
