My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Photography is one of the most challenging art forms around! I say this not just as an amateur photographer always looking to improve but as someone who has worked in various art fields from the lighting department for films to storyboarding, graphic design and comic books; also as someone who has studied formally and received an MA in Sequential Illustration and a BFA in Film. These various art fields have taught me a lot about composition, narrative, etc but for all this I am still in awe by the challenge of photography where one has only an instant to take the perfect picture-- and in that instant be ready for storytelling, composition, the characteristics of the lens and camera, and the possibilities of postproduction.
My passions are my family (wife and 2 kids), narrative art (photography), travel (I have lived on 3 continents) and practice. I tell my kids all the time: "practice makes perfect" or in my native Dutch "practice makes art (oefening baart kunst)".

I believe in the power of story and image and I want to go on telling stories to others. But most of all it is my hope that my kids will learn from my story and be inspired to practice and go for their dreams!
