My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited
Canada | Friday, July 5, 2013 | 3 photos
I fell in love with nature as a child. I watched ants laboriously move in and out of their sandy mounds, inch worms make inverted U-shapes on leaves, chipmunks stuff their cheeks with shelled peanuts and garden spiders sit amidst their mist covered webs. Photography began revealing its magic to me in the form of a Brownie Hawkeye that my Grandma gave me. I loved to load the film and carefully advance it into place. My first photos were taken with my Dad on a hike in a local conservation area. However, until recently the images themselves were of less interest than the actual practice of photography. Photography for me is an extension of the eye and a way to live more deliberately with a heightened sense of awareness. I am currently a student in an Environmental Visual Communication program. After working as a wildlife biologist for a decade I now want to acquire the photographic skills in order to engage people through visual means in environmental issues and scientific topics. My mission is to use visual communication to generate awe, fascination and wonder about nature in order to encourage people to get outdoors and develop this connection on their own.
