The Angkor Wat Economy - examining the people of Angkor

My Scholarship entry - The Angkor Wat Economy

Cambodia | Monday, November 24, 2014 | flickr photos

Photos are joyous and painful reminders of the world as it once used to be.

In the last 6 months, my travels to Barbados, Bangladesh, and Cambodia enlightened me to the gross injustice we are responsible for through our idle complacency as climate change continues to claim frontline communities. I have been present at UN climate negotiations advocating for climate action realizing that compelling narratives of solutions and marginalized voices need to saturate the dialogues so leaders act fast. I believe the power of visual stories to elicit emotional responses can enable a more empathetic world.

The act of photography has warned me about the danger of confining the world to my viewfinder and look beyond to appreciate the context of my images.

Recently 22, an aspiring photojournalist, the world is ubiquitously exploding with opportunity and imploding with our lack the foresight to see beyond our self-interest. It would be a privilege to translate the traditional knowledge of the Peruvian indigenous communities into stories documenting the rich biodiversity of the Amazon.

When I am old and full of life, I want these photos to reassure you that we chose the right path.
