My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Portugal | Saturday, May 18, 2013 | 5 photos

The earliest memory I have of really appreciating a photograph was back in 1999. This said photograph (taken by my father), was of Omani Guardsmen, holding rifles and all in similar attire, relaxing in the shade of the fort walls away from the midday sun. One guardsmen looks up to the camera, almost expressionless, yet clearly fatigue is setting in from the mornings training session. This photo really captured the essence of rural Omani, working life. It gives the viewer that moment of total isolation, imaging themselves taking that picture, being in that space, whilst encouraging them to delve into and explore more of this country.

As an amateur photographer, I believe the power of a photograph is underestimated. From being used as evidence to capturing personal memories, they play a big part in everyday life.

Constantly having the travel bug and with camera in hand whenever possible, this scholarship would be a truly gratifying experience. Exploring Greenland, and capturing the raw beauty this country has to offer through the lens, to then remind me of such a unique and wonderful opportunity; quite literally, would be a dream.
