Photography through the lens of a humanitarian worker

My Scholarship entry - The Unheard Story

Photography has been a passion of mine as long as I can remember. Growing up, I was taught about how to create a dynamic story through a frozen image by my grandfather, an extremely talented water-colour painter, who still inspires my work today. It was around my teenage years that I recognized that like water-colour painting, photography was a medium of visual art, where the artist told a story, frozen by a moment in time. I was immediately hooked, and photography quickly became my go to medium. I have always wanted to make photography a career. Throughout my teenage years, I would flip through National Geographic magazines, day-dreaming of being part of the team that brought those impactful stories from around the world to my bedroom. While I am now beginning a career in international development, I still am working to ensure that photography becomes an aspect of my work. Through my photography while working as an ID worker, I have occasionally had the opportunities to tell stories of individuals and families who face unimaginable hardships. It would be a dream to professionalize my photography to a degree which could make it a regular aspect of my work.
