At the market

China | Thursday, October 14, 2010 | 4 photos

On the winding road between the province of Yunnan and Sichan (West China) heading to the beautiful Lugu Lake , I was tired, driving long hours, turns after turns, in a monotonous landscape. Suddenly a crowd on the road made me stop. The loud laughs, the smell of grilled corn and nuts, the bright color of the traditional clothes….this fest for the senses pulled me out of the car. I forgot about my goal, my fatigue even the car in the middle of the road. The story of my four images is the story of this improvised market, this sudden encounter. I could only stay for one hour but what hypnotized me the most was one detail: the strong link between each member of this community expressed by the complicity of each one’s look. When you watch at the photos quickly one after another, it’s like a dialogue, as if the subjects are answering each other. A face tells more than a history book, I enjoyed this one hour so much because I became a witness. I learned so much in that slender moment of time, and I realized ignorance is the primary reason for human conflict. As a teacher of French, I managed to experience several cultures around the world. Fascinated by faces, photography became a way to capture, witness and share the diversity of humanity. I believe strongly in the relation of master-student to engrave life experiences. The opportunity to work alongside a seasoned photographer and learning from a professional’s experience and devotion to the craft will feed my eagerness to explore more and strengthen my photographic eye in order to share more of these slender moments of humanity with others.
