My Scholarship entry - La Habana

My name is Adriana C. Sánchez and I am a fine art photographer and aspiring photojournalist. As an ambitious, young artist with a highly positive energy and an irrevocable desire to photograph people and their rituals, I utilize photography as a means of understanding my surroundings; and more specifically, as a way to represent and question individual identity. Photojournalism is a field I would like to be apart of as it is a powerful way to share stories inspired by truths, open minds and draw us closer to one another. At age eighteen, I left Miami, FL to study photography at the School of Visual Arts, where I developed a unique, photographic language and realized my passion. I should be chosen because I am a sincere and humble artist who is not interested in popularity contests within this industry, but purely in building meaningful relationships and creating intriguing and honest work. For this reason, I am sharing with you one of my most personal projects: La Habana. Without losing sight of the political and economic struggles that affect the lives of all Cubans – I set out to create images that resonated the beauty and realities of my culture, as well as its many illusions.
