My Scholarship entry - The community of Alexandra

Someone I met two years ago told me that he made a division between people in the world: either cowboys or indians. He said I was an indian who wanted to be a cowboy. I didn’t know exactly what it meant, but I knew it was not good to want to be something I was not. Since then, I'm searching for my inner indian.
In this search I learned that it’s interwoven with life. And life is so unpredictable that the best possible way to treat it, is to try to live in ‘the now’. And that’s what photography does for me. It’s the only thing that gives me the strength to leave my thoughts behind and focus on what's before my lens.
For me it’s sometimes hard to know which place I have as a photographer. How do I interact with respect to the values of a community? But I believe that being there in that exact moment with my camera will give an honest interaction with people, which can lead to a sincere bond between me and the portrayed. That’s what I want and what I think everyone needs, just sharing a moment of life with someone else.
To see and learn from Jason and feel his take on photography and life would be amazing. I want to learn how to be a better photographer by meeting my inner indian.
