Being as their roofs consist mostly of dry leaves, every time it rains the families of Tuningo are forced to climb up a dangerous path to a cave in order to keep their children dry. In this picture, my partner and I climbed up to see for ourselves what it was like. It was a sunny day in Tuningo, the earth was dry, I almost fell down.

Two years ago I went to a very small town named “Tuningo” in the east side of the Dominican Republic, along with a group of volunteers from the organization Techo (Un Techo Para Mi Pais). The situation in this particular village was unbelievable. This picture represents the reality of my country, the side which is rarely shown and barely acknowledged by those of us, lucky enough to belong to a blind 2% of the population.

It’s true that these circumstances are rough on children, who are forced to grow and endure work at a very early age. But it is especially hard on the elderly, like this woman who at the time I shot this picture was 112 years old. Abandoned by her family, there isn’t much for her to do but to watch life pass her by.
