    When the volunteers and families finish building a house, the new owners get to cut the ribbon for the inauguration. This particular couple was so excited that they wanted to do it together, at the same time. They’ve worked so hard to pull through that you can’t even tell it’s two different set of hands, making their way through a new beginning. Views[232] Some may say that building emergency houses is not a real solution to the problem and that we’re only putting a bandage on the situation. I respectfully disagree and believe that, as small as the impact may be, it is proof that reality can be changed. Views[341] It’s true that these circumstances are rough on children, who are forced to grow and endure work at a very early age. But it is especially hard on the elderly, like this woman who at the time I shot this picture was 112 years old. Abandoned by her family, there isn’t much for her to do but to watch life pass her by. Views[342] Being as their roofs consist mostly of dry leaves, every time it rains the families of Tuningo are forced to climb up a dangerous path to a cave in order to keep their children dry. In this picture, my partner and I climbed up to see for ourselves what it was like. It was a sunny day in Tuningo, the earth was dry, I almost fell down. Views[341] Two years ago I went to a very small town named “Tuningo” in the east side of the Dominican Republic, along with a group of volunteers from the organization Techo (Un Techo Para Mi Pais). The situation in this particular village was unbelievable. This picture represents the reality of my country, the side which is rarely shown and barely acknowledged by those of us, lucky enough to belong to a blind 2% of the population. Views[555]
