Heart of Africa

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Hello How are you my name is Luke Hicks, ever since I was a little kid I could remember my mom telling about her dream to go to Africa with all her kids to see all the wonderful wildlife/culture/ meet the people. Eventually, myself, her second youngest out of five got in contact with The Jane Goodall institute at the age of fourteen and asked if there was any volunteer/photography work I could do for them as a new young inspiring photographer. At that point I was only fourteen, which was to young, but a few months later I got a call that Jane was a holding an auction at the famous Christies auction house in London for a new sanctuary. After succesfully getting some great photos at the auction which were used in a brochure shipped worldwide for fundraising and advertising. I kept in great contact with, The Jane goodall institute for the next three years and when I turned 18 I got a email asking me if I wanted to come out and do some indentification shots of a new group of chimps. Of course I said yes. After, this my life as a photographer really began, I spent six monthe's out in Uganda tracking/spending close contact time with the incredibles animals. Ever since then I have travelled to Africa several times, working with different concervation groups also doing some photography for them, I feel like the photos you will see you today really represent an original view of Africa, and give you a great incite into the animal through the photograph.
