Growing up in a developing nation like India at a time of its rapid technological and sociocultural progress has literally shaped the way I view the world and interact with it. Obscene affluence and abject poverty are almost blood brothers in a country like India. This dichotomy is a perfect recipe for visual delight and storytelling inspiration. Photography for me has been an expression of how I perceive this constant state of imbalance around myself and within me.
Photography has also made me appreciate the power of giving though Help-Portrait, a worldwide photography movement, the local arm of which I have initiated in my native city of Calcutta. Recently, I wrote a song called “Life is a Photograph”; capturing how life and photography are inherently intertwined!
Music and Design are my other passions that help me express myself creatively. I love to travel, soak in the myriad experiences with people and places and document them in short-films and photographs. This once in a lifetime scholarship with a world class photographer like Jason will help me hone my visual storytelling skills immensely and get me closer to my dream of becoming a documentary photographer and filmmaker.
