My Scholarship entry - Corazón

Honduras | Saturday, November 1, 2014 | 5 photos

I am a filmmaker and photographer. I grew up in the midwestern town of West Alexandria, Ohio. I've always been one to overcome obstacles. My mother abandoned me as a child after I was abused by her boyfriend (not my father), and my father died when I was three years old. I was raised by my grandparents. I survived a cult that I fell victim to as a child for 9 years. I got an education at Miami University. Despite not having the high school GPA to get in one of the most prestigious public Ivy League schools, I still managed to work my way in. I now run a start-up film production company. I love to travel. Though I have a home, I think that my real home is on the road. I've been to at least half of the states. My favorite states include Colorado, Michigan, Louisiana, and Mississippi. I've filmed a short film in and photographed Ontario. I've also shot a film in Honduras. I flew into San Pedro Sula, which Vice News has deemed "the most dangerous city in the world." I spent a week in the villages capturing the scenery and culture. I think if I was given the opportunity, this scholarship could help further my filmmaking/photography career and to help me tell, not only my story, but other stories as well. I believe storytelling through the art of filmmaking and photography is a gift to help change the world.
