Ceccout Egypt

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, November 6, 2011 | flickr photos

I try to show images that don't fit with the perception of a place. In these five shots, I show Cairo's "Garbage City" slum. Feared by most Egyptians, this area is home to the Coptic Christian minority. In times of revolution, the Copts are becoming a target for a more radicalized Egypt. When I travelled there, I wanted to show that life for the children can still be fun, despite the religious tensions plaguing the country.

My two goals in photography are to capture honest moments and to improve with every shot.

I could talk about how pictures speak to me, or how I have a philosophy of big words when it comes to image composition, but at the end of the day, taking photos is what gets me out of bed. I can't describe the feeling of a great shot. I bought my first camera two years ago, and still have that hunger to keep learning.
