The mighty ghats (the buildings & steps that lead to the river, usually built by former kings or other richies) - about 80 in total line the river.  For a holy river the people here don't treat it that well.  That ghats are lined with human excrement and rubbish is of no concern to the health of the river...not exactly what we would call 'respectful'
