When I went to Uganda, it was to
undertake an internship at the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation but I also saw the
filmic opportunity in this unique travel destination.
Ugandan people had suffered terribly
during the times of civil war and I met many orphaned children that affected me
with their stories of inhumanity. What inspired me most about these children
was their love of life and unwavering faith in the goodness of people, despite
what they had experienced. The children were so excited to express themselves creatively
that I found teaching them film to be such a rewarding experience.
I dealt with many challenges while
shooting the documentary including poor living conditions in the IDP camp,
limited resources, and communication issues due to the language barrier.
Sourcing interviews was also a challenge in that I was cautious not to overstep
any cultural boundaries.
On a personal level, my ambition as a documentary maker is to explore the
world, learn about new cultures, and live an active and adventurous lifestyle.
But I also want to communicate stories that will:
·
Encourage people to be more open minded and
socially conscious
·
Encourage people to protest inhumanity
·
Inspire future humanitarians and documentary
makers
