Meet Nico: My Travel Inspiration

I have lived in or travelled through so many countries that I often lose my place in the world. As a ‘Third Culture Kid’ I dream in multiple languages, call wherever my mum lives ‘home’, and know that the question ‘where are you from?’ has no simple answer.
How we self-define when identity eclipses nationality fascinates me; culture and customs interplaying so strongly with family and community that strangers share both little and much. I wish to explore how we find ‘home’ in vastly different places by documenting the vivid scenes, vibrant sounds and personal stories of our global community.
As a filmmaking student I feel I am a worthy recipient of this year’s scholarship. I have several strengths, from finding and building stories and character engagement to improving visual composition and camerawork. Many hours’ filming and editing in hostile environments have confirmed I have the stamina and drive to produce my own films. But areas in my skillset need work; like shifting visual narrative brevity from a reductive to an additive element, or harnessing diegetic vs storyworld audio. I find answers in study and practise but have many more ideas and questions. I learn rapidly so would improve greatly under Rapsey’s immersive, contextual tutelage. I am well suited to this scholarship as I am not an expert filmmaker, yet, and the experience would enable my goal to document global communities and individuals using film’s medium to answer what it truly means to be ‘from’ a place.
