My Scholarship entry - other half

Sri Lanka | Monday, November 24, 2014 | 5 photos

I still remember taking photos with my first camera that was given by my mother. I was very excited with those photos even though some of it was blurry, too bright or has partials of my finger. My mother was the one that guided me even though she was no professional photographer. Using both digital and film cameras. I joined the photography club in my school. I was walled out as I did not own fancy camera nor taking same photo style as them. I was lost at the time but when I start travel, the combination of travel and camera was what helped me learn more about photography, countries and life.

For me, The camera itself is a medium that links us to other things whether they are human, animals, food or astonishing panoramic view or awe constructions of human. telling the contemporary stories of events and no matter how time passed and things changes, the photograph of those moments lasts.

I accidentally came across this scholarship with Jason Edwards. It makes me think that I finally got a chance to participate and possibly to have an opportunity to learn from an expert that will give directions onto the path of travel photography and an invaluable experiences.

The concept of this photo essay is named 'other half'. In my opinion, other half could be anybody that will fullfill each other. It might only be a brief companion that shares moments or memories together. It can even extend to be a lifetime other half as well. This is what I selected from both film and digital format during my internship and travel in Sri Lanka.

Sincerely,
Dharath Hoonchamlong
