Goris

So, I've made it all the way to Goris, a town in the south of Armenia.  It's a nice place, although it is raining, but things are cool.

The last few nights I stayed in Yeghelnadzor - I did a little excursion around but the place where I stayed was a lot of fun.  I stayed with a family and they took care of everything - food was plentiful and good, the people were nice, I had a total blast!!!  One of the real fun parts was when we went to Jermuk at like midnight.  Kamo's friend arrived and we piled into the car to go and see the spa-resort where the world chess championships are being held right now.  It's interesting, he told me that in 93 he was a tank driver in the war between Azerbaijdan and Armenia.  In 93, I'm pretty sure I was stressed about if I should wear stripes or plaid.  Different worlds.... Also Grisha, the 73 year old dad, doesn't seem to think there is a lot of hope for Armenia - according to him, unemployment is just horrendous and corruption is awful.  I tend to agree that there are a ton of problems here, but I like to think the future will be better... hopefully.

Other than that, I managed to find a ride to Goris this morning, it's an older city and it'll be great for exploring some of the region.  THe guys that gave me a ride were really nice... but I get the feeling that there are different opinions between generations about Turks and Azeris.  The younger generation seems to pretty much be fine with the Turks and more or less so with Azeris, but the older generation not so much (there was a war) - it's interesting to see how things will change in the coming years.

Anyways, I'm off to explore a little bit before my marshrutka to a different city.
