My Scholarship entry - Born a Himba

Namibia | Monday, November 24, 2014 | 5 photos

It was in 1997, at the age of 17, when I made a decision that will change my life, travelling solo to Papua New Guinea. I was drawn to it’s cultural diversity, indigenous peoples and unique ecosystem. I crossed the Sepik River by canoe twice, trekked the Kokoda Trail, and became initiated  into one of the Sepik tribes.

Photography for me is a way to express my passion towards issues relating to diminishing cultures, global health, sustainability and the environment. In the last four years I’ve dedicated all my time to the development of a project called Wild Born. The project documents the ancient ways and sacred rites surrounding childbirth amongst tribal women.

Photography has been my teacher, a way for me to experience and learn other ways of life, about the world’s diversity and complexities.

As a self taught photographer who plan and conduct all my expeditions by myself I feel I will gain tremendously from observing Jason work and by learning more about professional photography. I am looking forward to sharing ideas, thoughts and inspirations with Jason. To be mentored by him is the next step for me in learning how to truly tell a story through imagery and narrative.
