I will never forget the day I went to Hells Kitchen in Malindi Kenya.
Hell's Kitchen does not have an evil mischievous sprite prowling over a 450° F oven armed with a recipe, oh and a secret ingredient,No. it is actually a tranquil site with old colorful rocks. it is however a very hot place especially during midday when temperatures can go as high as 50°.
whats fascinating about this place is the fact that is is hardly noticeable. very few people know about the existence yet the rich culture that lies within is breathtaking.
The Swahili tales that attempt to explain how the rocks came to be divided in three colors, (Red, White and yellow) goes like this.
In the olden days, two families (one poor and one rich) once lived here. the rich were however very proud beings and use to be spendthrifts.
they went to as far as using milk (from cow) for bathing. yes like water.
while the poor languished in poverty and sometimes would go without food.
One day, the gods got angry and destroyed the residence.
now this is how the rocks adopted the unique rock colors.
the Yellow signified the skin of the people who use to live there, (mixture of Arabs and Bantus (Swahili) White is the color of milk that spilled when the place was destroyed and red signified the blood that was shed during the destruction.
Hells Kitchen has characteristic rocks that taks shapes of familiar objects in Africa, some of which are the Map of Africa, there is one that looks like a male lion, and another of a female and male kissing among other unique shapes.
this is in deed a site to behold.
About 30-minute drive from Malindi town is a small village called Marafa. this is where the Marafa Depression is located that was later known as Hell's Kitchen.
The roads that lead to the site from Malindi town are all weathered.
hidden treasure this is provided those who would like to make a visit to the place bring their own means of transport or hire one in Malindi town.
