first big paddle

Having only done two or three hour sessions on the water since I arrived the chance arose, the weather was cooler not 50 c and a day off

for me to do some paddling, with little local knowledge and no maps we set of with wanting a proper day out ( similar to those with peter at the canoe club back home )

the red tide had seemed to have receded so I squeezed myself into a dancer and off we went !

Dibba rock first a wildlife sanctuary, only about 1 km off shore, as I paddled to the rock I must of passed three or four turtles, then a big fish below me, ( wish I had my fishing rod )

little bit of a swell, where next one ask himself, well there are some mountains on the other side of the bay no idea of there distance, tide coming in so I wont get pulled out to Iran which is only a days good paddle from here!

yep lets go for it, nice and steady pace about one kilometre into I pick up some swell may be three or four foot high, a few water taxis come and have a look at us and a patrol boat, keep ya head down here we don’t want any international incident ? few more K and we start passing in and out of thick red tide with a real pungent smell, like off caviar. One hour into mountains still look along way away!

About another forty minutes and sea snake black and yellow. Mountains still not getting any bigger ?

Finely after another fifty minutes the mountains start to get bigger, looking for a beach to rest up and have dinner( not lunch as the school dinner ladies ) I remember that we could be in Oman, and nether of us has our passports ? we will just wing it if we get stopped !

Found a beach 250 metres of unspoilt white sand. perfect spot!

After dinner we decided to paddle round to the town of Dibba, on our way we herd the call to prayer from the mosques that we could see quite a unusual noise to hear out in the ocean, few kilometres on and we are into the UAE, past the harbour wall where all the dhows are moored, then finale slog back round the breakwater and along the coast to royal beach, on the way seeing a load of fishing dhows returning.

As we pass the breakwater my muscle start to feel that they have had a work out, that warm glowing feeling that you get!

A good day that peter would be proud of I thought to myself !

NEW YEAR HEY YA ALL HAPPY NEW YEAR Well we went dune bashing for three days from new years eve till the second, Meet a group of fellow 4x4 drivers loads of different vehicles, from spec up wrangler jeeps to land cruisers with desert tyres on. We meet at a garage about thirty minutes from Dubai, and proceed to an entrance into the desert. Where we all stopped and put our flags on and deflated the tyres to about 15 psi. A briefing of who was leading and what order we should follow, then of to the sand. At first the dunes were sweeping twenty meter ones, not to bad I thought then we seemed to hit upon a a section of smaller dunes, which became very bumpy and the first 4x4 got stuck, it was the marshal of the ride? Quick look round and a tow out, was exciting to watch, the guys hooked a rope on and two beeps on the horn full revs and whoosh, the pathfinder was free. This happened a few more times, until he found his tyre pressure was still at normal road setting. Then we ground to a halt, had to dig the front two tyres out, and get pulled by Land rover disco, on our way again up and over the small dunes, bashing the front & rear end several times. We then moved on to some bigger dunes, and started power sliding on the face of the dunes, whoosh Did not think a two ton 4x4 would handle like a skate board with Tony Hawks on it. We then moved on to where we were camping, watched some of the guys try and start a BBQ, Started a fire with a area for cooking in ? flip saved the day again ! Set up camp few beers and a few more

how do you know if people understand you ??

YES , NO , SAME SAME ??

but although they use them they have no real understanding of the words !

Hey you all, well we can't buy any more booze for home unless we get a booze licence ?? doh ? not a big drinker as you all know ! i do like the odd jar ?

how it all works out here in the uae ?

ABU DHABI

well you can go to any of the hotels and get a beer with your food or use one of there bars and drink beer, all the other cafe's , posh places to eat can not serve beer,

you can buy booze from a place called spinnies for your home! but they have introduced a licence which is calculated on a percentage of your wages and you can only spend that ammount each month ?

Some of the other Emirates are more strict, although you can buy it through holes in the wall ????

It is all based upon muslim law, where you can not enter the mosque with booze in your body ??

going to try and get some tonight ?? will let you know !!!

most of the rules are also to keep Indian's and Pakastanies who do all the work from getting anything ?

It is the same algae that turned the nile red and bought a plauge to the nile area all those years ago !!

The red tide kills everything fish, sea snakes, coral, can cause

Paralysis in humans DOH!

today while doing some session in the clear blue water i saw

some fat russian gansters with there girls in thong bikins ??

now for some real news ????

turtles about 1 metre across swimming along, and some sort of squid that had been bling up so it had L.E.D'S ALL ON ITS UNDERSIDE ????

wooohoooooo !!

the wild life under the water is just some of the best in the world ??

Dolphin crazy saw about 10 riding the waves infront of the dow ! yeeeeeeeeeeeeeepeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

went swimming and got stung by small jelly fish loads of them so small that you can not see them (ouch) some vinegar sorted that out !!

Well when you get through the boarder you think that there is no difference but that is not true for the small villages that were once full of feirce fighting men alive called the shitui who carried small ice axe type sticks are now so friendly, they smile and laugh and try to have a conversation with you? For the most part the country is not developed although this is changing now!

the mountains rise from the sea and in the musadam rise to jeel harram at about 2089 metres,

work with a group from two schools, accomodation in a hotel, yep the flip had an suite ??

it is crazy at how many different nationalities that you can work with in one day?

problems we have are ! ( bit blunt but it is true )

austrailianthey are just daft as abrush, and don't listen, do anything other than what you ask them, Italians, hey they never shut up, will continue this in later stories

what else is crazy here how much sun does it have?

well i think it has enough for the whole solar system! and thats a fact !

how do they heat there water?? not by the sun like in turkey or other hot countries oh no, they have a water heater ????? what madness, i have never seen a sunny er place.

they are also going to build two gas / oil power stations in the next few years ? what

I think that this country has gone made or made made by the influx of the usa here !!
