Thailand Volunteer Opportunities: Give Back While Backpacking

Backpacking in Thailand is something that many people want to check off their bucket list, and it is easy to see why. The beautiful country is full of unique experiences, great food and a huge selection of accommodation that can be enjoyed for a fraction of the price of many Western alternatives. Thailand is great for those who want to experience a Southeast Asian country on a budget. To top it off, the Land of Smiles is truly full of friendly faces, with the locals often making travellers feel at home even though they are in a foreign place.

But something that people often don’t really think about, and an act that doesn’t cost you a cent, is volunteering. Thailand has so many options for you to do so that you can probably choose any category that speaks to you, and I’m pretty sure you’ll find. Let’s look at how you can give back during your travels.

Chai Lai Orchid

Elephants are majestic creatures that are commonly associated with Thailand. The image of people riding on chairs on the backs of elephants is something that is hopefully dying out and is being replaced with volunteer options that allow you to enjoy their company in a whole new way. With so much controversy surrounding elephant camps and tours, it can be tricky to know where to go. That’s where Chai Lai Orchid comes in.

This eco-resort is based in the beautiful mountains of Chiang Mai and is a great way to interact and connect with elephants in their natural habitat. Chai Lai Orchid lets their guests enjoy the elephant’s company without any bells and whistles whilst promoting elephant rescue and human rights. You’ll get to play with the elephants, bathe them and ride them (bareback, of course!).

In addition to helping elephants by rescuing and caring from them, Chai Lai Orchid is also part of Daughters Rising, an anti-trafficking NGO that educates and empowers women from Burma and minorities in Thailand in order help them against traffickers. You can make a donation to both of these causes (Dollars For DeeDee & Friends and Daughters Rising), but I highly suggest making the trip if you can!

Baan Dek Dee

Baan Dek Dee is a small orphanage located in the hills of northern Thailand that works in a unique way. While there are many charity foundations throughout the region, Baan Dek Dee has a one-of-a-kind approach to the way that an orphanage should be run, thanks to the vision of its founder, Manop, who was once an orphan himself. Manop believes that it is important to give Thai orphans the opportunity that so many of us take for granted - a chance to actively pursue their passions. He does this by educating them, feeding them and clothing them until they complete university or are able to work.

The children at Baan Dek Dee end up living at the orphanage for many different reasons, but the one thing that they have in common in that they have all experienced true hardship. Baan Dek Dee doesn’t have the funding or exposure as many other charity foundations and relies solely on donations to stay afloat. There are a few ways you can help Baan Dek Dee, but if you can, contact the orphanage and see what volunteer options are available. The reaction that you get from the children when you visit them is truly something special.

The Lanta Animal Welfare

Lanta Animal Welfare (LAW) is a non-profit organization based on Ko Lanta. LAW's objective is to rehabilitate suffering and sick animals on the island through sterilisation and care. Here you can come face to face with some of Krabi's most adorable creatures. They allow visitors to take the animals for walks and socialize with them. Lanta island is popular with tourists seeking a holiday away from the parties. If you’re staying in Krabi town, you can take a bus directly to Lanta island. If you’re staying in Ao Nang beach area, there are 2 daily ferries from here, so you could spend part of the day exploring Ao Nang area. I would recommend staying in Holiday Inn Express Krabi Ao Nang Beach, the first bike friendly hotel in Thailand who provides bicycle amenities for guests to explore Krabi in the most sustainable way.

Care For Dogs

Anyone who has visited Thailand knows that there is a serious overpopulation of stray dogs in the country. There are strays to be found in practically every part of the country, which is largely due to the excess of puppies for sale and neglected dogs that are dumped at temples or on the street. Care For Dogs aims to reduce the overpopulation through spaying/sterilisation programmes and encouraging local adoption. They also operate a rescue centre for puppies and dogs and help treat homeless dogs by giving them vaccinations and appropriate medical care.

Care For Dogs is always looking for volunteers to help with a wide variety of tasks. It doesn’t matter if you’re visiting Chiang Mai for a few days, weeks or months, they can always use your helping hand. The only requirement that they have when it comes to volunteering is a 3-day commitment at minimum. If you love dogs and want to help out, definitely pay them a visit during your stay.

It’s up to you which of these three (or all!) you’d like to visit or help, or maybe you’d like to conduct your own research. After all, there are so many other volunteer opportunities out there. All I hope is that you’ll consider giving back during your stay. In the words of Winston Churchill, “you make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.”

Where to Eat in Koh Samui | Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, Dinner

There is a reason why foodies travel to Koh Samui. The island, nestled in the clear waters of the Gulf of Thailand, has a treasure trove of restaurants and food establishments which specialize in local Thai and other cuisines. This is one of reasons people love Thailand.

Choosing where to eat in Koh Samui depends on several things, such as your budget or price point. Luckily the island has a range of options, from affordable street treats to luxurious multi-course meals. Scenic views and dining entertainment are also offered in many establishments, which may be a big thing for some people when choosing places to eat in Koh Samui.

Breakfast

For those who are looking for healthy breakfast menus, the island has several restaurants and eating establishments specializing in these type of food items. Vegans, vegetarians, and organic food enthusiasts can head down near the Bophut beach area for these options. Some restaurants also offer vegetarian buffet and an impressive salad spread near Chaweng beach, as well as a vegetarian, gluten and MSG free options near Lamai beach. There are food establishments in these areas that offer Western type breakfasts too.

Many of these specialty places are attached to a spa or wellness center so you might get tempted to indulge in a massage or spa session. You don’t have to hoard on a few pieces of fresh fruits and energy bars to scrimp on food costs. There are best places to eat in Koh Samui for the health and budget conscious.

Brunch

Since brunch is a highly anticipated event in Koh Samui, many food establishments are competitive when it comes to enticing customers. Aside from the elevated food options, many of these places offer light entertainment. One of the most popular options is "Sunday Session" at Beach Republic. They provide a lot of food options. A typical brunch food menu, whether you are in a Lamai beach club restaurant or in an establishment in Lipa Noi beach, often consists of local Thai cuisine, a wide range of seafood dishes, and the staple barbecue/grill section. Desserts often include fresh fruit and a mix of sweet and cold concoctions. Of course, what would a brunch be without the flowing drinks and cocktails? Mimosas, anyone?

Lunch

From Lipa Noi to Chaweng Beach, you can always find several best lunch places to eat in Koh Samui that offer different types of cuisines. For the budget conscious in search of the perfect Thai street food for lunch, several stalls near the fishing village located in Lamai Beach and the lakeside at Chaweng Beach sell traditional Thai curries, noodles, and even Thai-style waffles and papaya salad. Here, barbecued and grilled options are also crowd drawers.

Koh Samui-style seafood dishes are also served all over the island. The distinctive taste is produced from a combination of flavors such as coconut milk, hot peppers, and a variety of local herbs.

Dinner

What to eat in Koh Samui for dinner? This is the last meal of the day. If you want to go on a dining adventure, go to Chaweng beach where most of the beachfront resorts are located, and where there are proverbially many establishments and more choices per square mile.

Here, you have the staple Thai restaurant specializing in seafood dishes and classics such as the Pad Thai and Tom Yum. Along restaurant row, there is also a bistro and several restaurants serving Western-style burgers and fries. For a taste of authentic Italian pasta and pizza, try the ristorante down the road. There is also a gastropub that modernizes or elevates European cuisine to a different level. As a caveat, many of the more fancier places require a reservation, so make sure to call ahead of time.

So the answer to the question of where to eat in Koh Samui could be a long grocery list of different places around the island. Because there are indeed a lot of wonderful options, in the end, the quest for what to eat in Koh Samui becomes more appropriate once the hunger pangs strike. But fear not! With every meal of the day, there is always something for everyone.

How do I Plan My Trip to Hawaii

Hawaii is one one the most beautiful destinations in the world for the turquoise waters and white sands on each of the islands. I enjoy soaking up the sun while lounging on the beach or exploring the underwater world while scuba diving when spending time in the location. When I plan a solo trip to Hawaii, there are a few ways that I create my itinerary and stay organized as I prepare to leave for paradise.

1. Transportation

If I want to have more control of my schedule and stay busy, I opt for renting a car to travel around Hawaii. Renting a car makes it easy to get around with a group of friends that I bring with me while traveling. When I want to save money or are traveling to nearby locations, I use the bus, which has multiple stops and routes. When I plan to visit Oahu, the Waikiki Trolley is great to use when I want to explore the Waikiki Aquarium, the Bishop Museum, and Iolani Palace. The trolleys are open-air, which makes for an incredible experience because I'm able to take in the beautiful views of the island while spending time on the road.

2. Beach to Visit

Visiting the beach is one of the main activities on my itinerary when I plan my trip to Hawaii. It’s difficult to decide which ones to visit. I’ve read a few articles to find out the best beach in Hawaii. I found that Lanikai and Waikiki Beach are known as a public beach to spend time at where I can stay busy with my friends with plenty of outdoor activities that are available. I enjoy hopping into a kayak and exploring the open waters or getting a glimpse of colorful schools of fish or sea turtles while snorkeling. I also enjoy brushing up on my surfing skills or planning paddleboard lessons from one of the local instructors. The rock walls also make it an incredible place to swim and photograph.

3. Accommodations

Planning a Hawaii vacation means finding the right hotel to stay at to ensure that I have a home away from home during my trip. I prefer to book a stay at the luxury villa rentals Hawaii where I can take in the beautiful views of the ocean and enjoy a cup of coffee on the patio while basking in the cool breeze. I try to book a villa that includes a kitchen, which makes it easy to prepare meals or snacks without dining out for every meal.

It also makes it convenient if a laundry service is available, which allows me to pack fewer clothes. Staying in a Hawaii luxury vacation rental allows me to have more amenities and feel pampered in a fully-furnished space.

4. Places to Eat

Hawaii trip planning means finding the best places to eat in the local area when I want to indulge in authentic cuisine that encompasses the tropical environment. I plan on visiting Helena's Hawaiian Food, which is a local draw that is known for their kālua pork & pipi kalua short ribs in a casual setting where I can walk in with my sandals on. Nico's Pier 38 is perfect for their seafood that is locally sourced and offers beautiful views of the island with their floor-to-ceiling windows. When my friends and I plan to go out to dinner for the night and dress up, we'll stop by Monkeypod Kitchen where we can dine out on the patio and listen to a live musician play.

When writing down places to eat for my trip to Hawaii, I try to avoid chain restaurants that are available back home and instead dine at eateries that offer fresh cuisine. I also look for establishments that have a cozy environment and provide views to the outdoors so I can continue to enjoy staring at the ocean or lush palm trees.

5. Things to Do

I've learned that the best way to travel and enjoy a memorable trip is to have plenty of adventure and try new activities. When planning my trip to Hawaii, I look for exciting things to do in the local area that is away from many of the tourist sites. Zip lining in the lush jungle is at the top of my list where I can fly high at a fast speed. Taking surf lessons is also a must, which allows me to spend as much time as possible in the ocean and try to catch a few waves. Snorkeling, hiking, and swimming in the water allow me to experience the island and stay busy outside.

5 Thailand Luxury Beach Resorts to Put in My 2017 Bucket List

Thailand is home to some of the most beautiful beaches and enchanting resorts in the world. But with so many choices, it's difficult to know where to begin. So we've picked five of the top Thailand luxury beach resorts on five different beaches to give you a range of locales, accommodation options, and activities, without sacrificing style or the genuine Thai experience.

1. Rayavadee Resort, Railay Beach

Located approximately 800 kilometers south of Bangkok, the Rayavadee Resort's 96 distinctive two-story pavilions and five sumptuous villas sit nestled in tropical gardens. Each accommodation is superbly appointed, many have their own private pools, and all are within a few minutes' walk to the stunning Railay Beach. Book a private speedboat, find a secluded island, and snorkel or dive the extensive coral reefs. Go on a jungle adventure in neighboring Khao Sok, make a pilgrimage to the famous Tiger Cave Temple, or experience Railay Beach's impressive rock cliffs up close with a guided rock climb. With four dining locations offering gourmet Thai cooking, an exclusive spa and salon, and myriad opportunities for rejuvenation and adventure, Rayavadee Resort is definitely a great choice for your Thailand beach getaway.

2. Pimalai Resort and Spa, Koh Lanta

The name of this five-star resort literally means "little patch of heaven," and with some of the most gorgeous luxury villas in Thailand dotted within 100 acres of lush mountain jungle, this truly is nirvana. Situated on the tip of Koh Lanta, Pimalai is a unique and exclusive resort. The Pool Villas offer contemporary Thai architecture and style, a private sundeck, and a personal infinity pool, all at 60-80 meters above sea level. Other amenities include four resort restaurants, private beach dining, and a lavish spa. Water sports and beach equipment, as well as bicycles are complimentary for all guests. Explore Lanta Island by rental car, or brave your way through Emerald Cave at Koh Muk, a 60-meter tunnel that cuts through a precipitous mountain shaft and ends at a lagoon, both of which can be arranged through the resort.

3. Coastal Escape, Koh Yao Noi

If you're looking for a break from busy Phuket, this secluded Koh Yao Noi accommodation is only a 20 minute speedboat ride from the city. Overlooking the breathtaking Phang Nga Bay, the beachfront Coastal Escape is an exclusive hotel, with only four villas available. Each villa is well-appointed, includes a private plunge pool, a "service button" to be pushed for prompt staff attention, and the opportunity for private terrace dining. Known for its award-winning hospitality and service, exceptional food, and beautifully serene quarters, this resort offers privacy alongside its convenience to local restaurants, bars, and shopping. Rent an affordable scooter from the resort to get around town, arrange island excursions, or enjoy a massage in the comfort of your own villa. The Coastal Escape staff will oversee every detail to ensure your stay is unique and indelible.

4. The Tubkaak Krabi Boutique Resort, Nong Thale

Off the beaten track and along a tranquil stretch of beach, The Tubkaak Krabi Boutique Resort is an ideal romantic vacation spot. Inspired by local Thai architecture, each villa and suite compliments its lush surroundings, and the private outdoor bathtubs and personal pools lend a secluded luxury to your stay. Ensconced in trees with a spectacular beach view, the hotel's main restaurant Arundina serves gourmet Thai cuisine. The resort's alternative eatery Di Mare is a tropical Italian bistro on the beach. Indulge in L'Escape Spa or browse for a poolside read in The Library; this is the perfect place to hide away and relax.

5. Trisara Phuket, Thalang District

No resort does Thailand luxury villas with private pool better than the famous Trisara Phuket. Each villa and residence enjoys a fabulous view of the exclusive beachfront, a personal infinity pool, and an intimate outdoor shower. The service is impeccable, and the dining at each of the resort's four restaurants is delicious with the iconic Trisara Sunday Jazz Brunch known as the most excellent brunch on Phuket. Arrange a private helicopter flight over Phang Nga Bay, play a round of golf at the nearby Blue Canyon Country Club, or spend a day at the spa, this family-friendly resort has something for everyone.

My Suggestions for 5 Cool Things to Do in Bangkok

Bangkok, Thailand is one of the premier tourist destinations in the World. Travellers from all over the World flock to the capital of Thailand to experience the renowned hospitality of the Thai people. The sprawling metropolis, situated on the Indian Ocean, has about 8 million residents and occupies about 1500 square kilometers (650 sq. miles). By any measure, this is a city to be reckoned with. So, what cool things to do in Bangkok might heighten your experience. Fun activities to do in Bangkok include parks, museums, and other cultural activities. This article will help you plan your "escape game bangkok style." We will be reviewing five places and cultural areas to visit during your stay. In Bangkok places to visit are so numerous, so this article will help you to narrow down your plan.

1) For many of us, Thailand is a place of enchantment, a city associated with grand palaces and timeless elegance. One of the best ways to experience these fabulous traits is to visit the canals, called "klongs" that meander their way through the city. Today, Bangkok is a city of highrises, but around the klongs, it is still possible to experience Bangkok as it once was. You will traders buying and selling their time-honored wares. Indeed, this is also the place to see where Thais who are not part of the hustle and bustle of the new age still live. In beautifully carved houses, airy and full of the scent of delicious Thai food, you will experience the Thailand that most of us are keen to see, hear, taste, and touch. Thailand is built on the Chao Praya River - you can catch your tour boats on the Western side of the Thonburi River.

2) While you are in the Khlong, you might want to meander your way to an artistic secret of the best quality. In fact, this secret place is only accessible via a Klong. It is called "Baan Silapin" - which roughly translates as 'the House of Art.' Here, you can experience traditional shadow-puppetry, an art-form that has been practiced in Thailand for hundreds of years. The address is 313 Phetkasem 34, Khuha Sawan, Phasi Charoen, Bangkok 10160. You can get access via the Western side of Thonburi.

3) Do you love flowers? Be sure to check out the renowned Flower Market in the center of the Old City. Because of its tropical location, you will likely see many species you have never seen before. The warm rain forest of Thailand provides an excellent home for the most splendid of flowers: the orchids and the bromeliads. You can, of course, buy flowers to bring to your rented apartment or hotel room to enjoy during your stay. Prices are always great in Thailand!

4) So, you're not one for pulling any punches? How about watching some experts stick their head in the jaws of a gigantic salt-water crocodile? Sure, we have all seen this on TV, but seeing this in real-life is something both frightening and awesome. At the Samutprakaran Zoo, you can see some of the largest crocodiles in the World. Their keepers, in this case, are also performers.

5) Have you been touring Bangkok all week and need an adventure with friends? Check out the Escape Break Room game. The flagship venue in Bangkok offers four rooms with various themes. Some of these themes are Relic Rush, Ghost Ship, Outbreak, and Kowloon Captive. You and your friends will be a team, locked inside a room, and together, you will solve puzzles in order to escape the room. Each room is manned by an "Escape Master" who assists participants in solving the puzzle. But, time is running out! You have one hour to escape the room and solve the puzzle, so make sure to build up the team spirit! Check out the Escape Break Room website for more information.

With these 5 secret outings in mind, we hope you get an experience in Bangkok like no other!
